Publication day for In The Paris Fashion!

It’s publication day for In The Paris Fashion, my third adult novel under the name of Sophie Beaumont, and I couldn’t be more excited! So many lovely readers enjoyed the previous novels, A Secret Garden in Paris (2024) and The Paris Cooking School (2023) and I hope very much you’ll love this one too!

This novel, which tells a very contemporary story but reaches back into the past and the extraordinarily creative years of the fashion world in the between-wars years in Paris, is very close to my heart as it was partly inspired by a precious family legacy in the form of the experiences of my beautiful paternal grandmother Marie-Louise during her unconventional provincial childhood and amazing time in Paris as a young fashion illustrator and aspiring artist in the Paris of the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. Her handwritten notebook from the 1970’s, telling those stories, was transcribed by one of my sisters recently and proved very inspirational. Other inspirations come in the form of the fascinating world of ‘brocante’ or vintage/antique trading; the history of the silk trade in France, and of course the extraordinary place of Paris in the world of haute couture.

In my many visits to Paris over the years, including this year, I have visited the locations in the novel, such as the Avenue de Montaigne with its rows of designer showrooms; the fabric district in Montmartre, with its fascinating stores; and the famous art school, l’Académie de la Grande Chaumière. I’ll be profiling these and many other locations in the novel on a special page on this blog–watch this space!

I’d like to acknowledge the many people who have made this book such a gorgeous reality: my agent, Margaret Connolly; my publisher, Brigid Mullane and all the fantastic Ultimo Press team, for making this book the very best it could be, both editorially and in design and production; and to Cheryl Orsini for the gorgeous cover illustration and map. Special thanks to my sisters: Gabrielle, who walked many of the Paris settings with me; Camille and Beatrice, whose inside knowledge of the brocante scene helped flesh out Isabelle’s background; and Dominique, whose work on transcribing our grandmother’s handwritten notebook was of such help in evoking the atmosphere of late 1920’s Paris. Many thanks also to my niece Emilie-Marie, for showing me in real life what work at a couture school consists of. And to all my beautiful family in Australia, France and the UK, I am so very grateful for your loving support and encouragement, as always.

A bookish European trip…

I’ve just come back from a month overseas –in France, including Paris, the Pays Basque and Toulouse; in Vienna; and in Spain (in the Spanish Basque country). During that time, I did quite a bit of research for future books and collected photos for my forthcoming novel, In The Paris Fashion, too. As a teaser, here’s a few photos relating to settings, scenes or elements of In The Paris Fashion

Announcing In The Paris Fashion!

So excited to be sharing this announcement! My new adult novel, In The Paris Fashion, (written under the name of Sophie Beaumont), will be published by Ultimo Press in November!

Here’s the publisher’s announcement:

Ultimo Press are thrilled to be publishing In the Paris Fashion by Sophie Masson!

It’s a mystery that has passed into fashion legend: the perfect evening gown that was to be created by couture star Elisabeth Fontaine before her tragic death in 1930. Its design, a closely guarded secret, has never been found …

Just like Sophie’s previous novels, (The Paris Cooking School and A Secret Garden in Paris) In the Paris Fashion is utterly compelling, intriguing and romantic and this time it’s set against a background of timeless French fashion. J’adore!

Sophie says: ‘I wanted to tell a great story against the fascinating background of fashion, both contemporary and vintage, and to plunge the reader into a world of intrigue set around the enduring appeal of a legendary lost dress and what it means.’

Publisher, Brigid Mullane, says: ‘Say bonjour to your next escape: In the Paris Fashion is a heartwarming story of friendship, romance and stunning Parisian style – perfect for anyone who’s ever longed for a rendezvous in the City of Light.’

In the Paris Fashion will be published in November 2025 🎉

This is a very special novel whose inspiration is very close to my heart (and my family history). More on that soon, but right now, it’s celebration time!

Announcing A Secret Garden in Paris!

I have had to keep this exciting news quiet for quite a while, so now I’m absolutely delighted to be officially able to share it with you!

Ultimo Press will be publishing A Secret Garden in Paris, my second novel under my pen-name of Sophie Beauumont, in November!

Here’s the official announcement from Ultimo Press:

Quelle surprise! ❤️🤍💙 It’s time to pack your bags for a new Parisian adventure!

We are thrilled to be publishing A Secret Garden in Paris by Sophie Beaumont 🐿🌳It’s a captivating story of unexpected revelations, romantic discovery, hope—and the pleasures of a hidden green world in the heart of Paris. Ooh la la! 💐

Sophie says, ‘Something that’s always struck me about Paris whenever I’ve been there: its many gardens, offering vistas to admire, havens to take refuge in, places to play in, moments to draw breath in. But not all of them are well-known or obvious, and you might come across a green oasis in a little backstreet square or down some narrow stone steps or hidden behind an unassuming door. And Paris loves flowers, decks itself in them, revels in them…So you see, how could I resist?’

A Secret Garden in Paris will publish in November 2024.The deal was brokered by Margaret Connolly.

Writing about my characters against the joyful background of the gardens of Paris has been an absolute delight, and I hope everyone who loved The Paris Cooking School–and everyone still to discover it–will take this book to their hearts too!

New recipe and menu pages for The Paris Cooking School!

I’m delighted to announce that I’ve created two new pages on this site, which are associated with The Paris Cooking School. They feature recipes, food notes and menus mentioned and described in the book, so that readers can, if they wish, actually reproduce some of those things in their own kitchens! They are written as pages taken from Kate’s notebook, in Kate’s voice, but are real working recipes, tested and cooked in my own kitchen and illustrated with colour photos. And also illustrated with beautiful header images by my lovely friend, talented artist and photographer Lorena Carrington, who has brought the ‘look’ of Kate’s notebook to gorgeous life!

There are two pages: one features lots of recipes and food notes, the other is a simple menu with selected recipes from the main page so you can easily and quickly create a full Paris Cooking School-inspired meal. I hope you enjoy-and if you do cook any of these dishes, I’d love to hear your stories and see your photos, email to me at info@sophiemassonauthor.com

A fantastic few days in Sydney, visiting bookshops and being interviewed!

I’ve just come back from a lovely few days in Sydney, visiting fantastic bookshops, talking to enthusiastic booksellers, signing piles of copies of The Paris Cooking School and talking at a fabulous event at the Alliance Française, presented by Sydney-based French writer Olivier Vojetta. It’s been an absolutely invigorating, fun and exciting time, culminating in discovering at Sydney Airport that my book was number three bestselling book in their very popular bookshop! Here are a few pics from this week.

The Paris Cooking School is the Australian Women’s Weekly Great Read!

Absolutely brilliant news for The Paris Cooking School: it is the featured Great Read in the Australian Women’s Weekly latest (December) edition! That means a full page review in Australia’s most beloved and bestselling magazine–a real accolade! It’s an absolutely lovely review, too, here’s a short extract:

Learning to live and love again in the streets of Paris, city of romance, is not a new idea, but there is a freshness and vivacity to this cooking school novel that is utterly beguiling. Maybe it’s the mouth-watering and intricate food descriptions that send readers into a reverie, because be warned: You will be reaching for the frying pan, cracking eggs and slicing in decadent shards of butter and handfuls of fresh herbs in no time. Or maybe it is just the possibility of abandoned amour that follows our characters along every street…

Grab a copy of the magazine to read the rest!

ARC of The Paris Cooking School

Yesterday afternoon, I went to my mailbox and found this lovely surprise: a copy of the ARC (advance reading copy, or uncorrected proof) of The Paris Cooking School–thank you, Ultimo Press! Very exciting to see it bound, even if not yet in final form! And here’s hoping that everyone(booksellers, librarians, reviewers etc) who are going to be getting the ARC enjoy reading it 🙂

Pre-order of The Paris Cooking School

Sumptuous…Romantic..Escapist: The Paris Cooking School is now available for pre-order via the Ultimo Press website. Exciting! The book will be released in November. On the pre-order page there’s also a new author photo of me, one of a portfolio of several fabulous new author portraits, in both colour and black and white, which the very talented Lorena Carrington has created for me.
